How the south island was made.

  Once there was a man named Rangi the (sky father) married Pokoharua-te-po (Rangi’s wife). Aoraki was his oldest son. His brothers are: Rakiroa,Rakiua,Rarakiroa. Rangi fell in love with Papatuanuku, the earth mother, so the four brothers decided to check her out.

So the brother came down from the heavens.But then the brothers didn't think much of her so they set sail to find land but everywhere they looked they saw water and no land at all.

So they went south and found a storm and the brothers thought that it was from their father so they thought it meant come home!

So they said the kadakia but a mistake was made!The waka started to sink not lift and the waka flipped. The brothers went to the top of the upside down waka and huddled together on the higher side of the waka and their hair turned white then soon their hair froze then they turned to stone and the brothers were Mountains and the waka was the island and the brother were named like Aoraki which is now Mt Cook,but all 

Together the are the Southern Alps.
